Vehicle Insurance For Elderly Drivers

It is an unfortunate fact that when we get older, we lose some of the abilities that we had when we were younger. Eyesight gets worse, as do reflexes and concentration ability. A large number of collisions on the road are caused by drivers over the age of 65, and this is not something that is overlooked by the car insurance companies. Insurance for elderly drivers is usually more expensive than for people under the age of 65.

Now it would be unfair to say that all drivers under the age of 65 are incompetent, but unfortunately the statistics are high enough to say that over 65s are a high risk driving category. These drivers would most likely fail a drivers test if they were to have one again. BUT there ARE competent, cautious and legible over 65 drivers, who do not deserve to pay the very high premium that comes with the age.

The first thing that needs to be done is to look for an insurance company that offers specialised packages just for elderly drivers. There are even some motor insurance companies that are dedicated solely to catering for elderly drivers' needs. As with anyone else seeking motor insurance, it is important to compile quotes.

In order to obtain a low premium, the elderly driver will probably need to do a few tests proving that they are still competent. This includes an eye test and a test of the reflexes and concentration. Another way of lowering the car insurance premium is to get insurance with a company that does insurance for car and household contents, as putting all the insurance needs under one umbrella can give a much lower monthly cost in total.

There may also be a quiz on the rules of the road. Bear in mind that it can be 20 or even 30 years since the proper driving test was taken, so it is important that the elderly person is completely aware of how to drive safely.
